Will Oprah change the way you grocery shop?

I hope that you had a chance to check out today’s episode of “Oprah” as I urged you a few days ago.

In case you missed it, the mission of today’s show was to show consumers how farm animals are treated so that they can see and decide for themselves about buying into “cage free” and “free range” animal products. This comes as Californians decide whether they should vote to pass Proposition 2 which would, according to Wikipedia, “prohibit the confinement of certain farm animals in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs.”

If Californians pass Prop 2, we could see similar legislation enacted across the country.

I’ve had my own questions about “cage free” and “free range” for some time now. I’ve since answered my own questions, but I know that many people won’t be motivated to do their own research, so a report like this was long overdue. Now we all have the information that we need to make informed decisions about the products we regularly pick up at the grocery store.

But what are your thoughts? Will you be changing the way you shop? Do you even care about all of this?

  • Thanks for your comment in my blog, Melissa. I’m hoping the episode shows up on Youtube soon.

  • I was already planning to go organic for meat. I will now go organic/cage-free for meat & eggs. No question.

  • I’m just happy that people are being open to change. I know that sometimes people can be very resistant to these kinds of things. But as it says in “You Can Heal Your Life,” resistance is the first step to change!!!

  • Good to know that we are considering changes. Let’s see if Oprah’s power is enough…

  • I haven’t seen the episode (hopefully catch it online sometime soon), but as a vegan already I am just thrilled that she did a piece on it. People need to be more aware of the suffering these poor animals go through and decide if it’s really something they can live with. Personally, after going vegan, I’ve never felt healthier – and I feel emotionally better from not eating animals too. It really did change my life in so many ways…

  • Everyone can at least read a very thorough recap of the show on Oprah’s site until the episode reairs or pops up online somehow:
